Major Projects Planner – HRM

Halifax is a beautiful region of over 400,000 people located on the east coast of Canada. Founded in 1749, it has a deep history that is respected and honored. At the same time, it has a bright economic future with the advent of major energy-related and shipbuilding contracts.

With an economy that is expected to grow at well above the national average in coming years, there are many important issues to address, especially in the areas of land use, infrastructure planning, municipal servicing, and downtown revitalization.

They now wish to hire a Major Projects Planner with deep experience in urban and suburban planning.

As the subject matter expert in land use planning and urban design, you will provide recommendations on projects that require the discretionary planning approval of Council. These projects could include multi-unit buildings, mixed-use commercial/residential buildings, and complex greenfield subdivision developments.

Working closely with all stakeholders, you will research background information, gather public input, and synthesize data from other professionals to provide sound recommendations that are consistent with Halifax Regional Municipality’s Charter, bylaws and policies.

As the ideal candidate, you have a degree in planning from a CIP-accredited university and eligible for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planning. You have several years related experience in a growing urban municipality where you demonstrated your urban planning and project management expertise.

In addition to your technical abilities, you are a talented communicator who is comfortable presenting recommendations to senior staff, elected officials, and others with strong opinions on matters. Your negotiation skills are also well-developed as you will sometimes be forced to deliver difficult messages while still maintaining a positive relationship.

As the team leader, you will mentor other planners, technicians and support staff ensuring that they deliver services in a timely manner and achieve their personal goals.

The salary range for this position is $65,000 – $95,500 and a full position description is available upon request.

If this role interests you, please forward your resume and a cover letter telling us how your experience suits their needs. Applications can be emailed to Gerald Walsh Associates Inc. at, quoting project number 1626 in the subject line.
